CoolSculpting Q & A
What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is a noninvasive treatment that eliminates fat. The perfect alternative to liposuction, CoolSculpting is not a weight loss procedure; it’s a fat reduction treatment that requires absolutely no downtime. If you have pockets of fat that simply won’t budge — even in the face of religious diet and exercise — CoolSculpting may be the right fat loss treatment for you.
Which problem areas does CoolSculpting treat?
Because CoolSculpting isn’t a weight loss treatment, it’s recommended by the MD Esthetics team only if you are within 15 to 20 pounds of a healthy weight. The procedure is FDA-cleared to treat the following problem areas:
- Abdomen
- Flanks (love handles)
- Outer thighs
- Inner thighs
- Bra strap area
- Underneath the chin (double chin)
- Arms
- Beneath buttocks
In addition to eliminating unwanted fat, CoolSculpting can minimize the appearance of cellulite around the thighs, buttocks, and arms.
How does CoolSculpting work?
CoolSculpting uses a treatment known as cryolipolysis to cool and freeze unwanted fat cells. Once these frozen fat cells die, your liver naturally removes them from your body over the next few weeks.
What is the CoolSculpting process like?
Once you decide that CoolSculpting is right for you, schedule a session with the MD Esthetics team. During your appointment, your provider applies a gel pad directly to the targeted area. Next, they use a small handheld device, which resembles a vacuum nozzle, to gently deliver targeted cooling to the fat that you want to treat. Most patients see a 20 to 25% reduction in fat in their treated areas within the first three months of their first CoolSculpting visit.
As the applicator moves over your skin, it simultaneously suctions and cools, so you may feel a slight tugging or pinching feeling. While you may feel minor discomfort during the treatment, it should never be painful or unbearable. Immediately after the treatment, your provider massages the treated area to break up any frozen tissue.
The entire treatment takes approximately one to three hours, depending on the area you want to treat. CoolSculpting requires no downtime, but redness, swelling, cramping, bruising, and tender skin are all normal side effects that should subside within a few days.
